Performance Outline

Shinheung Military Academy, the Musical

With the historical background of the anti-Japanese independent movement in Seogando in 1910, Shinheung Military Academy is about the difficult and fierce lives of people under the convulsion of the social situation.

Though their names are not recorded in history, the members were opposed to Japan and devoted their lives to make “a nation where the Korean public becomes the owner.” The musical is about these people’s sacred sacrifices and holy victory, as well as the friendship and fellowship of the youth, and a record of their spirit which never ceased to exist. The musical describes the period of 1907 to 1920, reminding viewers of the history through the tears, laughter, and sacrifices of fighters for national independence.

The historical occasions of Korea including the dissemination of the Korean army, the death of King Gojong, and the battles at Mount Bongoh and Cheongsanri are described as the setting of the main story, adding to the realism of the play. In particular, stories of the founders who built military academy in Manju with their whole fortune, and the fighters produced by the academy are vividly presented on stage.
