Performance Outline

Road of Fantasy by Kim Hong-do

As the first of a series of exhibition-related performances, Road of Fantasy is about Kim Hong-do’s drawing journey to Mount Geumgang. It is a multi-genre performance showcasing Pansori, music, and three-dimensional renditions of Kim Hong-do’s famous paintings.

With the background of Korean painting images, the play starts with pansori of a sorikkun (Korea traditional singer), and the story is presented both on and offstage.

Joys and sorrow, and healing in the life of Kim Hong-do as an artist and a father of children, and as person, are delivered within a new artistic frame of epic drama and pansori, along with Kim Hong-do’s paintings.

The three-dimensional images of Kim Hong-do’s major paintings including Four Districts of Mount Geumgang, Tiger and Pine Tree on Seaside, and Tiger and Magpie, represent the details of depth and density of black ink color and sophisticated touches of paint, which doesn’t lessen any artistic quality of the paintings. They are well harmonized with music and epic drama, receiving favorable comments as it showcases the possibility of a new type of exhibition of Asian paintings.
